Julia to visit Camborne Royal British Legion on Remembrance Sunday

November 8, 2007 5:00 PM

Julia will meet members at the Camborne Branch of the Royal British Legion this Sunday, before joining them for the annual Remembrance Sunday parade and service.

This weekend will see the Gurneys Lane RBL club open its doors for the last time. A lack of patronage in recent years has forced it to close due to financial pressures, although there are hopes the club will be able to move to a more affordable location in the near future.

This year's commemorations come amidst a high-profile national campaign for the efforts, commitment and bravery of servicemen and woman to be properly rewarded. The Royal British Legion's 'Broken Covenant campaign', which calls on the Government to provide service personnel with fairer compensation, specialist mental and physical healthcare and better support for families who are bereaved, has been strongly supported by Cornwall's five Liberal Democrat MPs, including Falmouth and Camborne MP Julia Goldsworthy.

Commenting, Julia Goldsworthy said,

"It is very sad that the club is being forced to close at a time when the need for support for armed forces personnel and their families is so great. The Royal British Legion plays a vital role in both ensuring that the Government honours the Military Covenant and provides support for those who are currently serving in the Armed Forces and their families, and in making sure that we never forget those who have been injured or lost their lives for their country.

"I am sure that the club will be greatly missed by many local people. I understand that there are plans to relocate in the future and I will give them any support I can to ensure that a successful move can take place.
