Huge turnout at Commons Rally for Docker Compensation

January 29, 2008 4:00 PM

Hundreds of dock workers exposed to asbestos turned out in force at a Parliamentary rally this week, hoping to reverse a House of Lords decision that has denied them compensation.

MPs, doctors and lawyers were all present at the event, explaining why they felt the House of Lords decision should be overturned. Also supporting the rally was MP Julia Goldsworthy, whose Falmouth and Camborne constituency is home to many retired dockworkers.

Although so-called "pleural plaques" do not cause serious physical problems, they are often followed by deadly cancers. Julia Goldsworthy MP says that the fear of future illness is so serious that compensation should be paid, even if no cancer follows:

"I have been contacted by many constituents affected by pleural plaques, who are very concerned that they will go on to develop a devastating asbestos related disease. From speaking to them it's clear that this diagnosis leaves them with the terrible threat of further disease hanging over their heads. There needs to be a rethink on this decision so that these workers can get the compensation and support they need.

"There is clearly a huge groundswell of support to this campaign, which has the support of legal and medical experts as well as cross party MPs and GMB members. This rally has been a very successful demonstration of the scale of support for this campaign. I will be doing all I can to support the campaign so that the Lords will reconsider and overturn their previous decision."
