Julia has praised the quick response of Falmouth Firefighters following the outbreak of a fire at Pendennis Shipyard in the early hours of Wednesday morning. She will visit the dock on Friday morning to discuss with representatives from Pendennis the scale and impact of the fire damage.
The fire started at 2:30am in an electrical workshop on the first floor of a three storey building. Although smoke reportedly spread throughout the building, the fire was well contained and was extinguished by 6:00am. Six fire tenders attended, as well as the aerial ladder based at Truro. The 24 hour Falmouth crew were on site within 5 minutes of the call out.
Investigations are now underway to determine the cause of the fire.
Commenting, Julia said:
"Firefighters from Falmouth and across Cornwall should be praised for their efficient and speedy response, which means that 'business as usual' can continue at Pendennis Shipyard.
"Although no one was in the building at the time the fire was reported, the building was next door to a docked cruise vessel with 400 crew on board. The response time of just 5 minutes by the full time crew at Falmouth was crucial to ensuring that no one's personal safety was put at risk, and that the impact on an important business to the town was minimised."
