Cornwall's Liberal Democrat MPs today met with representatives from Network Rail to discuss Cornwall's rail services and the needs that passengers in the county will have from a new high speed train fleet.
With Ministers about to begin the specification process for a new fleet of high speed trains, MPs from across the county were keen to stress the priorities of their constituents - reliable service, comfortable rolling stock, and sufficient capacity to meet rising demands.
Following the severe disruptions on intercity services last week, a key issue for all attendees was the need for greater information for passengers on possible delays and cancellations, especially before they travel. Network Rail admitted that while engineering works are usually planned years in advance, passengers often have no idea of potential problems until they have boarded their train.
Commenting, Julia said:
"The rail service to, from and within Cornwall is a critical lifeline for local businesses and visitors alike. The completion of improvements to the Falmouth Truro branch line - due for completion in April - will help deliver a much improved service for both commuters and holidaymakers, and will help tackle congestion on the roads.
"Whilst there have been recent improvements to the comfort and reliability of many services, the Government need to be clear that they are committed to a new high speed train fleet that will complement the needs of passengers in the county. This means ensuring there is sufficient capacity as well as providing seating that is fit for purpose for those undertaking long journeys. As the government begin consideration of these issues, MPs in Cornwall will leave Ministers in no doubt of local needs."
