WELCOME REPRIEVE FOR GP DISPENSING SERVICES

December 17, 2008 11:30 AM

Proposed changes to GP services that could have made it more difficult for people to pick up their prescriptions in rural areas have been abandoned by the Government, following a huge local campaign against the measures.

Local MP Julia Goldsworthy had been working closely alongside campaigners, and joined them in welcoming the news.

Many patients in rural areas across Cornwall were fearful that the withdrawal of dispensing services would lead to longer journeys to collect prescriptions, and the loss of vital local services.

The proposals were put forward by the government as part of four different options on how the system would work in the future, but after overwhelming support in favour of retaining the current system, it was announced in Parliament that no changes will take place.

Commenting, Julia said:

"A large number of patients and GPs contacted me to raise their concerns that any changes to dispensing services would reduce access for large numbers of vulnerable people. I raised these concerns with Ministers, and thanks to our efforts, the Government have seen sense.

"From Mount Hawke to Mawnan Smith, GP dispensing services are a vital lifeline for many people who need medication, but struggle to travel far to collect it. Today's announcement is a victory for common sense, and will come as a huge relief to all those who feared they would be badly affected by the proposed changes."
