Thousands of pensioners are still waiting for the £60 Christmas bonus promised to them to help with fuel payments, research by the Liberal Democrat Team for Cornwall has revealed.
The information, released in answer to a Parliamentary Question asked by Julia Goldsworthy, shows that almost 11,000 pensioners in Cornwall will have to wait until after March to receive their so-called 'Christmas bonuses'.
Commenting, Julia said:
"Back in November, Alistair Darling promised pensioners a Christmas Bonus of £60 to help with their fuel bills. But he has delivered nothing of the sort. Thousands of pensioners across Cornwall will have to wait until Easter before they receive this money - when they will already have paid their winter fuel costs."
Dan Rogerson, MP for North Cornwall, added:
"It is completely unacceptable that so many pensioners failed to get the money at the time when they needed it the most. Many pensioners have been struggling this winter with exorbitant fuel bills. This extra money could have made a real difference if it had arrived on time."
