Killigrew Street Post Office in Falmouth is set to close at the end of the month, despite promises from Post Office Limited that it would remain open until the future of Falmouth's main Post Office had been secured.
Local MP Julia Goldsworthy has written to Post Office Limited demanding an explanation why a permanent location for the main Post Office has not been announced, and also why customers at Killigrew Street only learned at the very last minute about the fate of their local branch.
The news comes as another blow to Post Office provision in one of Cornwall's fastest growing towns. Last year, 3 Post Offices across the Falmouth area were closed as part of the Government's "network reinvention programme." Killigrew Street was offered a temporary stay of execution, on the basis that it should not close until a permanent home had been found for the main Post Office in Falmouth.
Although a consultation took place earlier in the year on proposals to move the main Post Office from its current location on the Moor to Costcutter, Post Office Limited have yet to make any final announcement.
Commenting, Julia Goldsworthy said:
"People in Falmouth have been very shabbily treated by Post Office Limited. Over a number of years Post Office services have been massively eroded in the town - now yet another closure seems set to go ahead before any certainty has been provided about the future of the main Post Office. People have every right to feel angry and let down.
"I have written to Post Office Limited demanding an explanation - their customers have every right to be treated with greater courtesy and respect."
