SCORRIER WASTE TRANSFER BID WITHDRAWN

March 30, 2009 3:45 PM

SITA Cornwall has withdrawn its controversial application to build a waste transfer station at Scorrier, after plans for a single incinerator at St Dennis were rejected last week.

Commenting, Julia Goldsworthy said:

"Withdrawing proposals for a waste transfer station at Scorrier was the logical next step for SITA to take, after incinerator plans at St Dennis were rejected last week.

"There is now an opportunity for a complete rethink on Cornwall's waste strategy - to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill, and be even more ambitious about increasing recycling rates. But time is of the essence - with United Mines landfill due to close next year, a future strategy for managing Cornwall's waste is needed sooner, rather than later.

"Whatever shape the future proposals take, it must be in consultation with local residents. I will be seeking a meeting with the new council as soon as possible to discuss their timetable for taking this forward.
