Cornwall College Principal Dave Linnell and local MP Julia Goldsworthy met with education Minister Sion Simon this week, to discuss the impact of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) capital funding crisis on the college's improvement plans at their Pool campus.
Plans were in process to spend £40 million renewing the college's buildings in Pool, as part of the wider regeneration plans in place for the area. Work was expected to start in 2010, and hundreds of thousands of pounds have been spent on preliminary work.
At the meeting the Minister warned the college to expect work to be delayed by at least a year - with any building work unlikely to start before spring 2011.
Commenting, Julia said:
"Cornwall College's campus in Pool is right at the heart of regeneration plans for the area, and its renewal is crucial to the economic and social development of the region. It's very frustrating that this important project is now facing considerable delay because the Learning and Skills Council was incapable of managing its capital budgets competently.
"Despite the very disappointing news of delay, this meeting was a very useful opportunity to impress on the Minister just how essential these improvements are. Although the College is affected by the delay, its record of academic achievement, its need for improved buildings, and the wider impact that their plans will have on the area all mean that the college has a very strong case to make.
"The Minister was left in no doubt that there are many reasons why Cornwall College should be high up the priority list as they sort out this funding fiasco."
