Julia met a group of young people from Portreath and listened to their concerns as part of Local Democracy Week. She met the youngsters at the Barn Youth Club along with local councillor Joyce Duffin, to discuss how young people can better engage with politics.
They discussed a plan previously suggested by Julia and Joyce to have a young person's slot at council meetings. Julia said this idea went down very well, and is hopeful that Portreath parish council may adopt the idea.
She said: "The young people were keen to be able to have their voices heard, and this would be one way in which they could air their views to local councillors. I very much hope that the council allows them to have a regular forum so councillors can have direct communication with young people on issues that matter to them."
Cllr Duffin added: "It was a great opportunity to introduce ourselves to the local youngsters and find out what they knew about local government. They raised the issues that were concerning them locally and they have decided that they would like to come to the Parish Council meetings and have their voice heard.
"It is a great step forward in letting younger people know how they can have their views heard and to let them know that what they say IS important. Hopefully in a few years time we will have a few new young Parish and Cornwall Councillors - even MPs!"
