It has been a great privilege to represent the constituency I was born and brought up in for the last five years. Tackling the issues that local people face is what got me involved in politics in the first place and it remains what drives me today. Cornwall has been let down by consecutive Labour and Conservative governments who either do not understand or do not care about our unique local needs.
For decades we have suffered under-funding in our schools, hospitals and police service, because insufficient account is taken of the extra cost of delivering public services in rural areas. This funding formula went unreformed by Labour for 13 years, and it is only through campaigning by Cornwall's Liberal Democrat MPs that we have seen any progress.
Together we secured an extra £94m for the NHS in Cornwall. Water bills have been cut for the first time in a decade, and reform of water charging in the South West is in the pipeline. More trains are running on the Falmouth to Truro branch line. St Michael's Hospital in Hayle successfully stood up to the threat of closure.
I am proud of the part I played in all of these successful campaigns. But there is still much work to be done. With our local services facing tough times in the years ahead, it's more important than ever that people locally have a strong champion in Parliament, fighting Cornwall's corner every step of the way. That's what I promise to do.
