JULIA WELCOMES TRELOWARREN STREET TRAFFIC REPRIEVE

3.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 5th Oct 2009

Local Police in Camborne have cancelled plans to close part of Trelowarren Street at night. The proposals were initially put forward as a way of tackling "boy racers" with loud exhausts, who frequently use Camborne's main street as a rat run at night.

But residents living on the side streets where the traffic was due to be diverted raised concerns with local MP Julia Goldsworthy. They felt proposals would only move the problem, rather than prevent it.

Julia said: "I am pleased that the local police have listened to people and changed their mind. Local residents were unanimous that plans to close Trelowarren St at night would simply move the problem elsewhere - not least because the side streets do not have any traffic calming measures in place.

"Tackling this problem doesn't require a street diversion, it needs regular police use of the decibel monitoring equipment, and a ban on the sale of car exhausts that create the noise in the first place."

Camborne town councillor Hayley Waller, who had campaigned against the closure of Trelowarren Street, added: "I am delighted that this proposal has been reversed. It's good to see that police are listening to local people."
